Exams and assessment

Set the test. Students sit it in the same app they study in.

Quizzes, timed tests, homework, projects and coding exams, published from one exam manager and assigned to a class group. Students open them inside GroutApp or GroutCode, the AI assistant follows the rules you set, and scores land in your gradebook.

What the exam module does

Everything from a ten-minute quiz to a proctored end-of-term paper, without a second assessment platform.

Five exam types

Exam, quiz, homework, assignment and project, each with its own due date, maximum score and late-submission rule, so one tool covers a weekly check and a final.

Timed tests

Set a time limit and the countdown starts when the student opens the paper. Late submissions are accepted or refused by a switch you control per exam.

Assign to a class, not a list of emails

Publish once and assign to one or more class groups. Students, and any verified guardians, are notified automatically.

Coding exams checked by the compiler

In GroutCode a coding exam ships with hidden tests. The toolchain decides pass or fail per test, so marking a hundred C or Java submissions takes minutes.

Proctoring you choose

Require the camera, the screen, both or neither before the exam opens. Recordings go to your institution portal, not to a third party.

An AI policy per exam

Allow the in-app assistant or switch it off, pin it to local models only and cap the number of interactions. Open-book with AI and closed-book are both one setting away.

Attempts, scores and analytics

See who started, when they submitted and how the class did per question. Export results as CSV or read them over the API.

Scores written back to Moodle or Canvas

With the LMS integration, graded exams post to the gradebook you already use, with roster sync and single sign-on alongside.

Paper exams are covered too

Not every exam is sat on a laptop. For paper tests, the same suite grades scanned or photographed handwritten answer sheets on the teacher's own computer, scoring each question against a rubric and matching scripts to roll numbers, with the teacher overriding any mark.

That means a school can run its term assessment the way it already does, on paper, and still get marks into the same dashboard as the in-app quizzes and coding exams.

Why exams belong inside the learning app

Most online assessment software for schools is a separate platform: a separate login, a separate roster, a separate export to reconcile with the gradebook. Students learn in one tool and are tested in another, and the teacher carries the results between them.

Grout puts the exam where the learning already happens. The textbook the class loaded into AI-Memory, the practicals they built in GroutCode and the quiz on Friday live in the same account, under the same class group, with the same AI rules. A student who studied with the AI Teacher on Monday sits Friday's quiz with the assistant switched off, or limited to local models, because the teacher said so on the exam itself.

What that changes for a school

  • One roster. Groups are created once, by roster sync from the LMS or by hand, and every exam, assignment and project is assigned to those groups.
  • One set of AI rules. The assistant students use to study is the one the exam governs, so there is no second app to police.
  • Marks that arrive where they are needed. Gradebook write-back posts the score to Moodle or Canvas; webhooks tell your own systems when an exam is published, submitted or graded.
  • Coding assessed by running the code. Hidden tests compile and execute each submission, which is how the lab practicals are checked too.

Frequently asked questions

Is the exam module included in every plan?

The exam manager, proctoring, analytics and LMS write-back are institution-plan features. Individual subscribers can sit exams their institution assigns but cannot author them. See volume licensing for school and college pricing.

Can students sit an exam offline?

The study tools and local models in Grout run offline. Publishing an exam, opening it and submitting it need a connection to your institution portal, so a lab with intermittent internet should download the paper at the start of the session and submit at the end.

What kinds of questions can an exam contain?

Document and office exams in GroutApp take written answers, worked documents and files. Coding exams in GroutCode take source code in C, C++, Java, Python, Node.js or SQL and are checked by hidden tests you supply.

How does proctoring work?

You decide per exam whether the student must enable the camera, the screen or both before the paper opens. Recordings are sent to your institution's own portal. Nothing is sent to Grout or any third party.

Can I let students use AI during a test?

Yes, on your terms. Each exam carries an AI policy: allowed or not, local models only or any model, and a cap on the number of interactions. The policy is enforced by the app during the attempt.

Does it work with our LMS?

Grout integrates with Moodle, Canvas and any LMS that supports LTI or REST: nightly roster sync, a sign-in button and graded scores written back to the gradebook. There is also a full REST API and webhooks for custom integrations.

Can we grade paper exams with it?

Yes. The answer sheet evaluation feature grades scanned handwritten scripts on the teacher's computer, against a rubric, with roll-number matching and teacher override.
