After installation, updates are optional. The software will work indefinitely without updates, though you won't get improvements or new features without periodically connecting to download them.

Limitations to understand

Local AI cannot match cloud-based systems in several areas. It doesn't have access to current information—no real-time data, recent news, or updated knowledge beyond when the model was trained. It can't browse websites, check facts against the internet, or pull in external sources.

The models are smaller, so they're less capable with very complex reasoning, highly technical material, or tasks requiring extensive knowledge. For advanced university courses in specialized fields, you may find the AI's understanding insufficient.

Language support beyond English is limited. Most offline models handle major European languages adequately but struggle with less common languages or specialized technical vocabulary in those languages.

Multimodal capabilities—understanding images, diagrams, charts—work but aren't as sophisticated as the latest cloud models. The AI can describe what's in an image and extract text, but detailed visual reasoning is weaker.

Privacy and control

The fundamental advantage of offline AI is that your work stays private by default. No one can see your questions, access your mistakes, or analyse your study patterns. There's no company collecting data about what you struggle with or how often you ask for help.

This matters particularly for students who are self-conscious about gaps in their knowledge or who worry about being judged for asking "basic" questions. With local AI, you can ask anything as many times as needed without that data being stored in a corporate database.
