What Grout Processes, and Where

Grout is desktop software. Almost everything it does happens on the machine it is installed on, so most of what you make never reaches us at all.

Stays on your device

  • Your projects, notes, canvases, code and video files
  • Textbooks, notebooks and syllabus documents added to AI-Memory, and the local index built from them
  • Prompts and responses from the models that run locally
  • Scanned answer sheets and the marks generated from them

Reaches our servers

  • Buying and activating a licence. Name, email and payment details, handled by our payment provider. Needed to sell you the software and to keep the licence valid.
  • The Nexus AI module, if you choose to use it. This is the optional cloud tier that spends Merits. When you use it, the prompt and any attached content are sent to the model provider to be answered. If you do not use Nexus, this never happens.
  • Support, if you contact us. Whatever you put in the message.

We do not collect your project content for analytics, and we do not train models on your work.

How We Use Your Information

Your information is used to:

  • Provide and maintain our services
  • Improve and personalize your experience
  • Communicate with you about our services
  • Ensure compliance with our policies and applicable laws

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, including:

  • Access to your personal information
  • Correction of inaccurate information
  • Deletion of your information
  • Opting out of certain processing activities
  • Data portability

Privacy for Students

How student privacy actually works in Grout:

Student work stays on the device

Grout processes student work locally on the machine it runs on. It is not transmitted to, or stored on, Grout servers — so there is no vendor-held student record. Where a school collects data locally, the school remains the data controller. Grout holds no COPPA, FERPA or SOC 2 certification, and does not claim one.
